1. Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Of course we start with the highest mountain in Africa! As I was landing in Tanzania, I sparked up a conversation with my neighbor. I asked her why is she visting Tanzania. She said, "I am hiking Kilimanjaro. It has been a goal of mine for years. I am a backpacker and Tanzania is at the top of my list."

To be honest beautiful people, the "Top 7 Activities To Experience When Touring Tanzania and Zanzibar" list, I have done 6 out of the 7 activities and Mount Kilimanjaro is the seventh activity I do not plan on doing. I know people who have done it, but for me and this body...No Thank You! I encourage others to do it (LOL).

Mount Kilimanjaro, stands at 19,340 feet above sea level and a bucket-list destination for many adventurers. This dormant volcano attracts thousands of trekkers annually, each seeking to conquer its summit and experience the breathtaking views from the top. Several routes are available for climbers, with the most popular being the Marangu, Machame, and Lemosho routes, each offering a unique journey and differing levels of difficulty.

Preparation is essential for a successful Kilimanjaro trek. Climbers should engage in physical training weeks in advance, focusing on building endurance and strength. Adaptation is also crucial to ensure that trekkers can adjust to the altitude, which can lead to altitude sickness if not handled properly. If you are a dare devil, this is the activity for you!

2. Safari in Serengeti National Park

Folks! This was my favorite part of the trip. Not only was I there, my family joined me as well. It was their first time to The Motherland and I am still in a state of bliss. We experienced Africa in the best way...TOGETHER. My family and I selected a curated trip so we can just enjoy or time and not worry about anything logistical.

Maybe next time we will try the self-guided tour but a curated trip to an unknown place was definetly the best decision. We wanted to be catered to which we definitely were. Plus my family is Bougie. We like the finer things in life. We are from Los Angeles so we are different (LOL). West Side!!!

Serengeti National Park, is an iconiic wildlife reserve recognized globally for its expansive savannas and diverse ecosystems, offers unparalleled opportunities for observing wildlife in their natural habitats. When I say "unparalleled," there is nothing that even comes close! The Seregeti National Park is were they based the record-breaking movie and broadway show "The Lion King!"

I saw Nala, Simba at all ages, Pumbaa, Timon, a bunch of Ed's, and Rahfiki's! I was on Cloud 9, literally! Not only did we tour the Serengetti in a road-based safari landcruiser with a pop-top roof. My family and I took an air ballon for the first time! The picture above is what I took with my iphone 13 while in the air. It was breath-taking to the point I could have gone home after that and been happy.

That was just day 2 with 8 days to go! I was blown away and had an apiphany while gliding through the air. I told myself, "I want to do this for the rest of my life (almost tear drop)." I even changed my YouTube Channel name to "Travel With Leslie." I WILL travel for a living. Until then, let's visualize us traveling for a living. Which counrty would you tour first?

The best time to visit this remarkable destination aligns with the Great Migration, which typically occurs between June and October. During this period, millions of wildebeests and zebras pass over the plains in search of fresh grazing land, creating a magnificent spectacle that draws nature enthusiasts from around the world. Visiting during the rainy season from November to May can reveal lush landscapes and an array of young, vibrant wildlife.

Guided safaris are highly recommended to enrich the experience, as knowledgeable guides provide valuable insights into animal behavior, ecology, and the unique characteristics of the park’s biodiversity. Whether you are riding in a safari landcruiser or soaring in an air ballon, each activity allows you to appreciate the intricacies of the Serengeti's ecosystem while ensuring a respectful and responsible interaction with the wildlife. MY FAVORITE PART OF MY TRIP!

3. Relaxing on the Beaches of Zanzibar

Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Tanzania, is renowned for its tranquil beaches that attract sun-seekers from around the world. The pristine shores and sky blue waters offer an idealized backdrop for relaxation and exploration. Among the most notable beach destinations in Zanzibar is Nungwi.

Nungwi is where we stayed in Zanzibar. The resort was top notch and I am yearning to return. From the food, band, and communal game area, we had a time we will never forget. Just looing out into the water was mesmerizing. It felt surreal. We even had a beachfront view from our room. This resort is located at the northern tip of the island.

The beach is ideal for swimming and sunbathing, as its waters remain calm and inviting throughout the year. The allure of Zanzibar beaches extends beyond their natural beauty; the coastal towns reflect a unique cultural tapestry woven from African, Arab, and European influences. Historical sites, such as Stone Town (location of picture above), capture the essence of Zanzibar’s past and provide a contrasting experience to the serene beach lifestyle.

As I immersed myself in the island’s diverse heritage, I gained a deeper appreciation for the context of their tropical retreat. The combination of intoxicating beaches, rich culture, and adventure make Zanzibar a must-visit destination for anyone touring Tanzania.

4. Exploring the Spice Islands

Zanzibar, often referred to as the Spice Islands, is a treasure trove of aromatic spices and rich agricultural traditions. The spice tour offered us an immersive experience into not only the diverse spices cultivated here but also the historical significance that these commodities hold. A visit to Zanzibar allows you to engage directly with the cultivation and harvesting processes that have shaped the island’s economy and cultural identity for centuries.

During the spice tour, I had an unique opportunity to explore plantations that grow a variety of spices, including cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and black pepper. Each spice has its own story and significance; for instance, cloves were once highly prized and had a substantial influence on trade routes in the Indian Ocean.

We got to indulge in tasting sessions where we experienced the rich flavors and fragrances of freshly harvested spices, learning how these can be utilized in culinary practices both locally and beyond. We bought cinamon saop, perfume, and incense made from the local women. We defintely supported the local economy especially after we were educated on how tourist money comes in and out without benefting the community. Spices are one of the main income revenues for the country.

Ultimately, exploring the Spice Islands is more than merely an agricultural excursion; it is a journey through Zanzibar’s cultural and historical landscape, intertwined with the tantalizing scents and tastes that have helped shape the region's identity.

5. Wildlife Adventures in Ngorongoro Crater

The Ngorongoro Crater, renowned as one of the best-preserved calderas globally, offers a unique glimpse into an ecological marvel where wildlife thrives among stunning landscapes. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site, this crater is home to a rich array of animal life, which includes the famed African Big Five: lions, elephants, leopards, rhinoceroses, and buffaloes.

The caldera, formed millions of years ago from a collapsed volcano, provides a variety of habitats that support diverse species, making it an ideal location for wildlife adventures. One of the most remarkable aspects of the Ngorongoro Crater is it also has the name of "Crater of Humanity" where the oldest fossils of all time have been found.

Confirming the fact The Motherland is The Motherland, where everything started for the human race. Above is the picture of my mother and I at the artistic expression of the skulls that were found in Ngorongoro. POWERFUL! We encounted large populations of zebras and wildebeests, along with an abundance of other animals such as gazelles, hyenas, and various bird species.

The crater's structure allows for year-round game viewing opportunities, though certain periods, particularly during the dry season from June to October, are often considered optimal. During these months, animals congregate around water sources, enhancing the chances of spectacular sightings.

However, the ecological system within the Ngorongoro Crater is not without its challenges. Limited space and resources within the caldera pose threats to local wildlife due to competition and habitat degradation. Conservation efforts are underway, including ranger patrols and community engagement initiatives, aimed at preserving this unique ecosystem and ensuring that its diverse species continue to flourish.

It is vital for us to respect wildlife regulations and support sustainable practices to contribute to the preservation of this extraordinary natural environment.Through participation in guided tours, we can deepen our understanding and appreciation of the importance of these conservation efforts while enjoying one of the most iconic wildlife adventures in Tanzania.

6. Cultural Experiences with Local Tribes

My My My! One of the most notable experiences was visiting the Maasai villages, where we engaged with the nomadic people renowned for their distinct customs, attire, and vibrant traditional dances. We witnessed firsthand their captivating lifestyle, participated in cultural ceremonies, and even joined in local activities such as dancing, watching them start a fire with their hands, singing with the school children, and shopping from the local female artisans.

In addition to the Maasai, there are numerous other indigenous groups throughout Tanzania and Zanzibar, each with unique traditions. We should approach these interactions with respect and openness, being mindful of local customs and etiquette. Supporting local artisans by purchasing handmade crafts not only provides tangible souvenirs but also ensures that the revenue benefits the community directly.

In the above picture you can see me shopping for my bracelette and earrings.Responsible tourism plays a crucial role in preserving the cultural integrity of these communities. By participating in guided tours that emphasize sustainability and ethical practices, we can contribute positively to local economies while fostering cross-cultural understanding.

Engaging with tribes in a respectful manner enhances the experience and promotes a deeper connection to the vibrant cultural fabric of Tanzania and Zanzibar. In conclusion, cultural experiences with local tribes not only enrich us as traveler’s but also help protect and celebrate the traditions that define these remarkable regions.

7. Captivating Underwater Adventures

The waters surrounding Tanzania and Zanzibar are renowned for their rich marine biodiversity, making it a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers seeking exceptional underwater experiences. From vibrant coral reefs to diverse marine species, the opportunities for diving and snorkeling are truly unparalleled.

I took advantage of the water sports such as snorkeling and diving, with the nearby coral reefs providing an extraordinary underwater experience. We were surprised with a catamaran by our host and I snorkled along the catamaran. Need I say more!!!

Through education and responsible tourism, visitors to Tanzania and Zanzibar can leave a positive impact on these precious ecosystems. Embracing the beauty of the underwater world while being mindful of environmental sustainability will enrich your experiences, allowing us to enjoy the wonders of nature responsibly.
